Siliguri, Jul 18 (Siliguri Journal) – Chicken transport drivers and co-drivers have announced a statewide strike beginning Thursday to protest alleged police harassment and driver beatings. The indefinite strike is expected to cause a rise in chicken and egg prices.

So far, Siliguri hasn’t been affected, but chicken sellers and drivers in the city and nearby districts have reported similar complaints of police harassment. They allege that vehicles transporting chicken are being stopped and money is being demanded despite having the correct documentation.

If the strike continues, Siliguri may soon see a hike in chicken prices. Currently, whole chicken is sold at Rs 150 per kg, and cut chicken meat at Rs 240 per kg. These prices are expected to rise significantly in the coming days.
