Siliguri, August 07 (Siliguri Journal) – The Siliguri Municipal Corporation encountered strong opposition during an anti-encroachment drive at Jalpai More on Wednesday. The operation aimed to demolish shops constructed over a major drainage system. However, the Jalpai More Byabsayee Samiti, a local businessmen’s committee, successfully blocked the efforts.
The committee demanded that any demolition be preceded by discussions with them and arrangements for the rehabilitation of affected shop owners. Local residents joined the protest, blocking the Municipal Corporation’s JCB and holding posters.
The protest forced Municipal Corporation employees to halt the drive. Meanwhile, the Mayor, who was passing through Jalpai More during the protest, instructed officials to remove the shops encroaching on the road and drain.
